The evening of Saturday 14th June will see the second annual Durham Illuminate Festival.  Building on the success of Illuminate 07, which achieved finalist in the Best Event Durham in The Journal Culture Award 2007, Illuminate 08 will feature a variety of street theatre and entertainment on the river banks, culminating in a spectacular firework finale.  Acts including Mr Lucky, The Baghaddies and The Invisible Men will perform from 5.00pm when the Regatta admission fee will be waived.  At 9.30pm, a street parade will leave the Market Place, leading the public down to the river banks, where they will be able to enjoy further entertainment before hundreds of fire cans are ignited, giant fiery fish are set alight and the night sky illuminated.

Featured Acts

The Invisible Men - Set entirely to music and sound effects, the Invisible Men perform without a spoken word.  The show crossbreeds comedy, audience participation and genuine visual trickery.  It is litterally packed full of unique, funny and fast moving gags, from making objects float tin mid air, wielding sledgehammers and attempting to ensare small children in bear traps, to attacking the audience with water, popcorn and china plates.

Punt! - Two Oxbridge undergrads are off on a relaxing punt.  Blissfully unaware of reality and physics, the boat drifts down busy streets and they regale and serenade the public.

Mr Lucky's Party - Mr Lucky begins, alone under a perpetual downpour, but he is soon joined by a guest.  During the tea party that follows, the couple begin a celebration.  Party hats and even a cake appear, however with each course the weather worsens, the downpour increases and their mood blackens.  The show concludes with a bizarre, spectacular and unexpected twist.

Desert Island Discs - This spectacular show involves an Island with palm trees, tightropes and buried treasure, the Castaway unwittingly invokes the curse of the claw and his island paradise is transformed as an angry twenty foot high lobster emerges from the sand.

The Baghdaddies - The Balkan Gypsy.  One of the most fun bands in this or any other universe... the Baghdaddies guarantee an uplifting and joyous show.
