In 2011, the trade and assets of the Durham Regatta Committee, which had existed from the Regatta’s inception in 1834, were transferred to Durham Regatta Limited, a company limited by guarantee.
Not only was the transfer necessary to limit the liability of Committee members, but was also an opportunity to consider the long term strategy of the regatta, and ensure an appropriate structure was put in place to deliver the aims and objects of the Regatta, which are:
- to organise run and ensure the continuation of the Durham Regatta held since 1834;
- hold ancillary events at the time of such regatta or during each year; and
- to support the sport of rowing generally by making donations or otherwise providing support to schools, clubs, colleges and the public generally in order to promote the sport primarily but not exclusively on the River Wear in the City of Durham.
The regatta is organised by Durham Regatta Limited, whose members consist of local rowing clubs, schools and universities, as well as local government and other members of the Durham community, all who give their time and services free of charge. The company is run by eight directors, four of whom are appointed directly by the Company, with the other four consisting of one each from the founding members of the regatta being Durham Amateur Rowing Club, Durham University, Durham School and the final director appointed by Durham County Council.
Whilst the directors are responsible for legal governance of the company, their main role is to focus on long term strategy, with the day to day running on the planning, preparation and running of the regatta delegated to an executive committee. The Chairman and Secretary of the executive committee are automatically appointed as two of the directors of the Company.
The executive committee report to the members of the Company at least four times per year, with additional meetings held in the four months preceding the regatta.
All members of the Company, in addition to the directors and executive committee give their time and services free of charge, and without whose support the regatta would not be able to run.
